How to Cope with Mental Illness in the Family

Watching a family member experience the complexity of mental illness can feel painful, grueling and overwhelming. The hardest part can often be, not knowing how to help them.

Not every family is equipped to handle mental illness. Some people find it extremely difficult to cope watching someone they love go through such a hard time in their lives. Not being able to provide comfort can be arduous.At Vision Counselling and Psychology, our therapists see this on a daily basis.

Stigma Around Mental Health

For many years there has been a stigma surrounding mental illness. In some cultures, it is still not acknowledged as something that exists or even a possibility that there could be an unseen issue with mental health rather than physical health.

Due to the stigma around mental health, not everyone accepts that they have a mental health issue. And even if they themselves accept it, there is a possibility that people around them might not.

Since we cannot visually see mental illness in the same way we would see a broken leg, many people underestimate the impact mental illness can have on the individual and their family.Some people may consider mental illnesses to be uncommon and unusual even though it is extremely common.Almost everyone has or will experience a mental health issue themselves, or in close friend or family member at stage in their life.

Every Persons Situation and Family is Different

Of course, every person’s situation is completely different. No two cases or families are the same. Certain mental health symptoms might seem quite similar, however, no situation is ever identical. Some people might have a very detailed diagnosis of a mental illness,while others might still be figuring out their symptoms and the best treatment.

You may be concerned about your loved one’s behavior. They may be behaving in ways which could be harming you or themselves without even realizing it. That’s a difficult situation to be in, and you may experience feelings of helplessness and despair.

Finding out your family member has a mental illness is difficult, however it is important to remember that the person going through the disorder most likely feels even worse. Mental illness is emotionally and physically draining for everyone and leaves people extremely vulnerable.

Seeking Mental Health Support

Recognition and support is key to help mental illness. Support from family, friends, and community. A doctor, psychologist or counsellor can assist your family member in finding the right treatment.

Just letting a family member know that you are there if they need you and that you love them no matter what can make a difference. It can help your loved one, feel supported while they work through a difficult time. You could ask them if there is anything that you can do to support them and let them know that they can come to you to talk or for other supports if they need to.

Remember you as the family member may well need support also. So, remember self-care is going to be very important and ensure that you reach out to a counsellor if you need to or you are having trouble coping. The more we speak about mental illness, the more a reduce the stigma around it.
